The provincial government of Benguet has launched its Science and Technology Innovation (STI) Plan, aimed at addressing local agricultural challenges and promoting sustainability. The plan, which was introduced on Tuesday, December 10, focuses on using science and technology to make the province a model for sustainable farming and community development.

Tackling Agricultural Issues with Technology

Benguet’s agriculture, particularly vegetable farming, faces issues like soil acidity, which affects crop yield. According to Provincial Board Member Joel Tingbaoen, the STI Plan is designed to tackle these problems through innovative solutions. "By adopting the STI Plan, we can implement measures that address challenges such as soil acidity," he said. The plan introduces precision agriculture and smart farming technologies, which aim to improve productivity while reducing environmental impact.

Leading the Region in STI Implementation

Benguet is the first province in the Cordillera region to approve an STI Plan, setting a precedent for others to follow. Tingbaoen expressed pride in the province’s leadership role, saying, “We are proud to be the first in the region. Everyone is watching us to see how we implement it.” The STI Plan is a living document that can be adjusted as the needs of the province evolve. As such, it serves as a model for neighboring provinces looking to integrate science and technology into their agricultural practices.

Empowering Farmers for a Sustainable Future

A key aspect of the STI Plan is its focus on empowering local farmers. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is already offering training programs to help farmers adopt new technologies. Dr. Shiela Marie Singa-Claver, DOST-Benguet Provincial Director, emphasized that the province is committed to improving farmers’ skills and enhancing their capacity for sustainable farming. Additionally, DOST-CAR Director Dr. Nancy Bantog highlighted the use of green technologies and circular economy principles to ensure environmental protection and community resilience.
