Iloilo City has made great strides toward local inclusion and sustainable development during the last six years, mostly due to its dedication to community empowerment and sustainable development.

Iloilo's recent efforts, which center on projects that support environmental sustainability, cultural diversity, and economic progress, have improved the lives of its citizens all the while raising the city's prominence.

"Iloilo City is more than just a place; it's a community where innovation meets tradition," remarked Mayor Jerry Treñas. "Our achievements reflect our shared vision of building a city that thrives on creativity, inclusivity, and sustainability."

City’s accolades for local innovation and development

Iloilo City received recognition for its culinary legacy and dedication to cultural preservation when it was dubbed the Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) awarded the city the 2023 Most Business-Friendly Local Government Unit (LGU) award in recognition of the city's dedication to creating a business-friendly environment.

Additionally, the city's innovative I-Bike Program, which encourages a bike-friendly atmosphere, was recognized for its commitment to sustainable urban mobility and community involvement by winning the esteemed 2022 Galing Pook Award.

All of these reflect Iloilo City's initiatives to promote local businesses and draw in investments that enhance the city's economy.

"We envision our markets not just as economic hubs but as community centers that promote local culture and entrepreneurship," Mayor Treñas emphasized.

Putting premium on local products

Developing the infrastructure wherein local enterprises thrive is essential to highlighting the city's goods.

The planned public-private cooperation with SM Prime Holdings for the revitalization of the Central and Terminal Markets aims to trailblaze the vision. Aiming to update market facilities and create a welcoming environment for regional business owners to prosper and exhibit their wares, this project is estimated to be about P1.5 billion to P2.5 billion.

"By revitalizing these spaces, we create opportunities for our vendors to grow their businesses sustainably," said Mayor Treñas.

With the challenges of foreign influences, the local government unit as a whole is committed to promoting Iloilo City's sustainable development plan going forward.

"Our focus is on building a city that nurtures innovation, preserves our heritage, and enhances the quality of life for all Ilonggos," he said.
