The Museo Sugbo, Cebu’s provincial museum housed in a centuries-old Spanish-era complex, is scheduled to reopen this August after years of closure. The museum, located along MJ Cuenco Avenue in Cebu City, has undergone rehabilitation to preserve its rich history and improve visitor experience.
As anticipation grows, officials say the reopening is part of a broader effort to revive cultural tourism in Cebu, giving both locals and tourists a chance to reconnect with the province’s heritage.

Restoration And Preservation
Originally built in 1871 as Cebu’s main provincial jail, the structure was converted into Museo Sugbo in 2008. The recent restoration work focused on repairing damage from previous typhoons and making the museum more visitor-friendly.
“I’m very happy that Gov. Pam has decided to re-open the museum… Museums are not earning institutions. They are to be supported," said Capitol’s Consultant on Heritage and Museum Affairs Jose Eleazar “Jojo” Bersales in a Facebook post.
Efforts included fixing the roofs and walls, improving exhibit lighting, and reorganizing galleries to better highlight Cebu’s layered history. Local officials hope the upgraded space will encourage more residents and tourists to explore the province’s heritage.
Highlighting Cebu’s Rich Heritage
The reopening of Museo Sugbo is seen as an important step in preserving and sharing Cebu’s story beyond its famous beaches and festivals. By enhancing museum spaces and adding educational activities, the province aims to inspire greater appreciation for local history.
While final details of upcoming exhibits have yet to be shared, the museum’s restoration symbolizes Cebu’s commitment to safeguarding its identity through culture and history. Heritage advocates believe that reviving Museo Sugbo can help connect new generations to the province’s enduring legacy.
With the scheduled reopening in August, locals and tourists alike can look forward to stepping back in time within the museum’s historic walls — a chance to reflect on the events and people that shaped Cebu.
