To help increase the production of bananas in Central Visayas, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is providing farmers with modern technologies, according to an agriculture researcher.

Recognizing the fruit's commercial feasibility in the Philippines, Jennylou Velasquez, science research specialist at DA-7, stated that utilizing the new technology will substantially benefit in the development of the banana business.

“Bananas are the top 5 crop commodities of the Philippines with a higher value in the economy in our country. It provides livelihood to the people, especially the farmers,” Vasquez said.

Aiding the farmers

The agricultural department is providing technology under the "Banana Package of Technology" or the "Banana Cultural Management and Practices" to assist producers in increasing their yield.

Farmers will be introduced to a range of banana varieties under this package that require only stem cuttings—not the "saha" or shoot—in order to bear fruit and thrive in any kind of soil.

Notably, the Cavendish banana, which is mostly grown in Mindanao, is one of the most popular exports from the Philippines.

Supporting the banana industry

According to the DA, the goal of this program is to assist the Philippines' banana industry, which is a vital economic sector.

The DA also noted that bananas provide a living to farmers and are acknowledged to be one of the causes of economic development in the region.
