The public-private-community partnership (PPCP) is helping to promote sustainable blue swimming crab (BSC) production in Barangay Tortosa, Manapla, Negros Occidental through its "Adopt-a-Village Project" platform. As a result, Barangay Tortosa will serve as a model community for the Blue Swimming Crab National Management Plan (BSCNMP) pilot implementation.
Ensuring the sustainability of crabs
In order to guarantee the sustainability of crab resources, boost community involvement in the preservation and protection of the product, and raise Seafood Watch's rating, 14 PPCP members have joined the pledge of the implementation.
“The vision behind this project is anchored in empowerment and sustainability. We are establishing a community partnership that harmonizes innovation with tradition, ensuring that our resources are utilized wisely,” Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said
Through profitable social enterprise, the BSC Adopt-a-Village project aims to improve the socioeconomic circumstances of the fishermen and other community members.
An ecosystem approach
To accomplish several goals for the welfare of the people, the economy and also to promote good governance, the project was also planned to use the ecosystem approach to fisheries management.
The goal of an ecosystem approach to fisheries is to balance various societal goals by applying an integrated approach to fisheries within ecologically meaningful boundaries.
The approach also accounts for knowledge and uncertainties regarding the biotic, abiotic, and human components of ecosystems and their interactions.
