The Artesanias de Iloilo trade fair is back this year, transforming into a vibrant hub of creativity and sustainability. With a spotlight on micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the event demonstrates how local innovation can invigorate communities and drive economic growth.
This year’s theme, "entrepreneurial narratives," speaks volumes about the fair’s mission. PJ Arañador, the exhibit designer and curator, put it succinctly: “Innovation is equal to sustainability, which is localized. Money is hard; we circulate money among ourselves so it gives livelihood to everybody.” This philosophy encapsulates the fair’s aim to support local businesses while fostering a sense of community.
The diversity of exhibitors—spanning bamboo, coffee, cacao, and high-value coconut products—shows just how rich the region's resources are. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Iloilo has played a pivotal role in this development, offering training in business management and financial literacy to help these enterprises thrive in a competitive market.
Showcasing Local Gems
Take, for example, Gemma Cabayao, who has recently launched a unique soy sauce (toyo) crafted from matured coconut juice. With DTI’s training, she has expanded her product line to include cooking oil, virgin coconut oil, coco jam, and soaps. “These were introduced to us only this year,” she explains, her enthusiasm palpable. Her story exemplifies how targeted support can help entrepreneurs turn innovative ideas into tangible products.
Then there’s Segundo Esmeres, a talented bamboo weaver whose craft has gained recognition and demand. Thanks to training from the University of the Philippines Visayas and DTI, he not only creates beautiful bags and fans but also mentors others in bamboo weaving. “You have to be interested. It needs patience,” he says, emphasizing the dedication required to master the craft.
Engaging the Community
The fair goes beyond showcasing products; it engages the community through a variety of interactive events. From bamboo weaving demonstrations to coffee brewing sessions, attendees are invited to participate and learn. The DTI aims to generate PHP 3.8 million this year, building on last year's success and underscoring Iloilo’s market potential.
