Cebu City has marked a significant milestone in its digital transformation with the launch of the Paleng-QR PH initiative. Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia introduced the program on Thursday, August 15, at the Carbon Public Market, aiming to promote cashless payments in local markets and tricycles.

A Leap Towards Cashless Transactions

The Paleng-QR PH initiative is designed to facilitate a shift from cash to digital payments, providing a secure and convenient alternative for everyday transactions. This new system will enable residents to pay for goods and transportation using digital methods, reducing the reliance on physical cash. The program is part of a broader national effort to enhance the digital payments system in the Philippines, making transactions safer and more efficient for everyone.

Mayor Garcia’s Vision

During the launch, Acting Mayor Garcia emphasized the importance of embracing digital technology. Quoting Greek philosopher Heraclitus, he said, “Change is the only constant in life,” underscoring that this initiative represents a crucial step towards a more connected and modern Cebu City. Garcia, who was instrumental in authoring City Ordinance 2682 to support the program, expressed his enthusiasm about this advancement. “This isn’t just about keeping up with technology; it’s about ensuring everyone benefits as we advance towards a digital future,” Garcia stated.

A Community Effort

The Paleng-QR PH initiative reflects Cebu City’s dedication to innovation while honoring its cultural heritage. By incorporating digital payments into daily transactions, the city aims to enhance economic resilience and provide greater convenience and security for its residents. Garcia highlighted that the success of this transition depends on the collective effort of the local government, market vendors, tricycle drivers, and the community. “Building trust and ensuring everyone is comfortable with these new payment methods is key,” he noted.
