Leyte province in Eastern Visayas emerged as a growing destination for science tourism, thanks to a collaboration between the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Tourism (DOT). The initiative aimed to boost awareness and appreciation of science, technology, and innovation through immersive, educational travel experiences. A two-day site assessment held on November 29-30, 2024, marked the beginning of the development of tour programs that combined science with tourism in the region.
Science in Action: A Tour of Innovations
The science tourism program took visitors to several fascinating sites across Leyte, each showcasing cutting-edge technology and local innovation. Notable stops included the Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining Corporation (PASAR) in Isabel, Leyte, and Energy Development Corporation’s geothermal steamfields in Kananga and Ormoc City. Other highlights included the Coffee Processing Center and Alto Peak Café Chocolate Processing in Ormoc, as well as agricultural facilities like the Jackfruit and Camote Processing Facility in Baybay City.
These sites offered hands-on learning opportunities, allowing visitors to explore sustainable farming practices, eco-friendly production methods, and the technological processes behind energy and manufacturing. The goal was to provide an educational experience that blended science with the beauty of Leyte’s natural environment.
Eastern Visayas: A Rising Educational Destination
The initiative sought to position Eastern Visayas as a premier destination for educational tourism. By integrating science with tourism, the DOST and DOT aimed to attract not just local visitors, but also international tourists interested in sustainable development and technological advancements. Through this collaboration, Leyte became a unique location where innovation met nature, offering a fresh perspective on both the region’s culture and its role in scientific progress.
