In the face of rapid biodiversity loss, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a vital role in the Philippines’ fight to protect its unique and endangered species. And in the recently launched “Save From Extinction” campaign, 5 organizations are at the forefront of this crucial battle, championing conservation efforts that aim to secure the future of both wildlife and human communities.
Endangered Species Advocacies
Representatives from each organization spoke in the “Save From Extinction” press conference held last December 12.
As prompted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and SM Supermalls, they detailed their specific cause and conservation efforts they will implement or improve on using the funds collected from the campaign:
-
World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines: Representing both the pawikan and dugong, WWF Philippines engages in broad conservation initiatives that focus on sustainable development, habitat protection, and public education. By implementing projects that balance ecological preservation and human needs, they aim to maintain vital ecosystems that support both wildlife and people.
-
Philippine Eagle Foundation: Dedicated to conserving the critically endangered Philippine eagle, they work tirelessly to protect this national symbol. Through research, breeding programs, and forest preservation efforts, they highlight the eagle’s role as an indicator of forest health and ecosystem balance.
-
Zoological Society of London (ZSL): ZSL has contributed significantly to protecting the Philippines’ rich biodiversity by conducting fieldwork, advocating for policy changes, and supporting local conservation projects. Their work includes tackling wildlife trafficking and preserving critical habitats for vulnerable species, including the Palawan pangolin.
-
D’Aboville Foundation: This foundation focuses on conserving the tamaraw, an endangered buffalo species found only on Mindoro Island. Through community-based programs, they foster local involvement in protecting the tamaraw and its habitat, which is essential for the species’ long-term survival.
-
Katala Foundation: The Katala Foundation is committed to the protection of the Philippine cockatoo. By addressing threats like habitat destruction and illegal wildlife trade, they work on habitat restoration and community awareness programs to foster coexistence between humans and wildlife.
Through their participation in the “Save From Extinction” campaign, these organizations show that protecting biodiversity is a shared mission. Moreover, each one contributes unique expertise and resources to combat the threats facing the country’s endangered species.
