David Christopher Delaserna, a cacao farmer from Tugbok District in Davao City, has been selected as one of three Filipino representatives for the 2025 Cacao of Excellence program in Paris. The announcement, made by the Department of Agriculture (DA) 11, highlights the growing recognition of Philippine cacao on the global stage. Delaserna was chosen from 29 entries across the country for the Philippine Cacao Quality Award (PCQA), an honor that opens the door to international competition and exposure.
Delaserna will join two other exceptional Filipino farmers—Bayani Garcia of Cebu and Osmeña C. Tajo of Samar—who were also selected for the prestigious event. The competition, which takes place every two years, is part of an ongoing effort to elevate the Philippines' standing in the global cacao industry.
Aiming for Global Cacao Excellence
The Cacao of Excellence program is a global competition that showcases the finest cacao beans from around the world. In 2021, the Philippines made a strong impression with three entries ranking among the 50 Best Beans in the World, two of which received gold and one silver awards. For 2025, the Philippines is aiming for even greater success, with the theme “Go for Gold” reflecting the nation’s ambition to secure multiple gold awards at the competition.
Supporting Filipino Farmers and Sustainability
Beyond the competition itself, the Cacao of Excellence program is designed to promote sustainable farming practices and empower cacao-growing communities. By recognizing top-quality beans, the program encourages farmers like Delaserna, Garcia, and Tajo to adopt innovative and environmentally responsible methods that enhance both bean quality and farmer livelihoods.
