The Philippines has earned recognition for three of its natural wonders—Apo Reef Natural Park, Turtle Islands, and Balinsasayao Twin Lakes—being included in the prestigious ASEAN Heritage Parks network. This brings the total number of Philippine ASEAN Heritage Parks to 14, solidifying the country's leadership in biodiversity conservation and climate action.

Apo Reef: A Marine Treasure

Apo Reef Natural Park, the largest coral reef system in the Philippines and the second-largest in the world, is a haven for marine life. With over 480 fish species and rare creatures like dugongs and whale sharks, Apo Reef is a vital part of the global marine ecosystem. Coral reefs like this one play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and protecting coastal communities from storms.

Turtle Islands: Protecting Endangered Sea Turtles

The Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Sulu Sea, is the ASEAN region's most significant nesting site for the endangered Green Sea Turtle. Recognized as the 11th largest nesting site globally, it’s an essential area for conservation efforts. Protection of these islands ensures the survival of this vital species while also safeguarding the delicate marine habitats that help regulate our climate.

Balinsasayao Twin Lakes: A Biodiversity Haven

Balinsasayao Twin Lakes, nestled in the mountains of Negros Oriental, offers rich biodiversity and essential ecosystem services. The lakes provide clean water for local communities and host various endemic species. These ecosystems also help mitigate flooding and soil erosion, which are becoming more pressing concerns due to climate change.

Protecting Our Natural Heritage

The Climate Change Commission (CCC) emphasizes the importance of integrating climate action into the management of these newly designated parks. By reducing pollution, controlling overfishing, and promoting sustainable practices, these areas can continue to play a critical role in climate adaptation and mitigation.
