A coconut tree in Narra, Palawan is catching attention—not for its height or fruit, but for something far more unusual: its growing branches.
Locals were quick to take notice, with some saying the tree brings good luck. Others believe the coconut oil from its fruit has healing powers. The odd-looking tree has since become a bit of a local attraction, drawing in curious residents and even making it to national news.
Not Magical, Just a Natural Defect?
Botanist Muhmin Michael Manting weighed in on the phenomenon. He explained that, despite the buzz, the tree isn’t magical. “Most likely, the apical bud—the part responsible for the tree’s upward growth—was damaged,” Manting said. That kind of damage could be caused by a lightning strike, strong winds, or possibly even a natural mutation.
When that happens, the tree may stop growing straight up and start sprouting branches instead, which is rare but not impossible in coconut trees.
Nature's Wonder: The “Tree of Life”
Coconut trees (Cocos nucifera) are part of the palm family and can grow up to 100 feet tall. They’re often called the “Tree of Life” in the Philippines because nearly every part of the tree is useful—its fruit is edible, its leaves can be woven into products, and its trunk is used in building homes.
This tree in Palawan may not be magical, but it’s still a marvel of nature. Whether it’s a lucky charm or just a botanical quirk, one thing’s for sure: it’s giving people a reason to stop, look, and wonder.
