The MAY-KAN: Find the Juan in Region 1 event, now in its third year, offers an exciting opportunity to dive into the heart of Ilocos' vibrant food culture. This culinary tour not only highlights the region’s signature dishes but also aims to establish Ilocos as a must-visit destination for food lovers.

A Feast of Flavors in Ilocos Sur

The journey kicked off at the Caniaw Heritage and Forest Park in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, where participants were treated to a feast of traditional Ilokano dishes. Featured culinary gems included pipian (a chicken dish with squash seeds), sapsapuriket (a savory beef stew), and ladek (a rich rice dish). These unique recipes, which are passed down through generations, are an essential part of Ilokano culture, offering a taste of the region’s history, ingredients, and local flavors.

Exploring Agri-Tourism in Ilocos Norte

The event also included a visit to Enrique’s mulberry farm in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, a fresh addition to the region’s agri-tourism scene. Participants had the chance to pick sweet Illinois variety mulberries and taste products made from them, including mulberry jam and juice. This hands-on experience not only showcases Ilocos Norte’s agricultural offerings but also provides visitors with a deeper connection to the land and its bounty.

Strengthening Ilocos’ Culinary Identity

As the tour continued, the overarching goal of MAY-KAN became clear: to shine a spotlight on Ilocos' rich culinary traditions and position the region as a leading gastronomic destination. Department of Tourism Regional Director Evangeline Dadat emphasized that events like MAY-KAN are key to boosting tourism, creating more opportunities for economic growth, and promoting the region’s culinary identity to a wider audience.
