The Department of Transportation (DOT) is targeting the completion of the rehabilitation of Tuguegarao Airport by December, as part of the government’s broader initiative to modernize regional airports and strengthen connectivity across the country.
Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the project supports the Marcos administration’s push to improve transport infrastructure in order to boost tourism, investment, and local economic activity. He emphasized that upgrading provincial airports helps make travel more efficient while encouraging more visitors to explore destinations outside Metro Manila, particularly in Northern Luzon.
According to Lopez, better and more modern airport facilities are expected to increase passenger confidence and stimulate business opportunities in Cagayan and nearby provinces.
Capacity expansion and passenger experience upgrades
Once completed, the airport will significantly expand its capacity from 212 passengers to 743, easing congestion and improving operational flow at the Tuguegarao Airport.
Lopez recently led an inspection of the facility together with officials from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippinesand local government representatives. During the visit, updated development plans were also presented to Cagayan Governor Edgar Aglipay and other stakeholders.
The improvements are expected to result in a more comfortable and efficient travel experience, with upgraded passenger handling systems and enhanced terminal facilities.
Long-term developments and safety enhancements
Beyond the December target, additional upgrades are scheduled, including redesigned interior and exterior terminal works expected to be completed by 2027. These will further increase seating capacity and improve overall airport functionality.
Authorities are also planning key operational and safety enhancements such as the deployment of a modern fire truck, improvements to night landing capability, construction of a new administration building, and an extension of the runway to accommodate larger aircraft.
Together, these developments are expected to transform Tuguegarao Airport into a more capable regional gateway, supporting increased air traffic, stronger tourism flows, and improved economic activity across Northern Luzon.
