Barangays Bacsil and Mumulaan in Paoay, Ilocos Norte will soon see the construction of another 300 megawatt (MW) solar project, which would help lessen the nation's reliance on fossil fuels.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Provincial Board) unanimously adopted Resolution No. 2025-03-432 extending support and endorsement to Opus Solar Energy Corp. to pursue the project.
The Paoay local government unit, which includes the host barangays, has previously said that it supports the initiative.
Part of billion-peso project
The solar project is one of the new clean energy initiatives totaling PHP75 billion that the Board of initiatives certified as green lanes.
At least 200 hectares of forest area were first determined to be viable for the project by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Executive Order 18, issued in February 2023 by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., established the Green Lane Program. For investments that the government deems a priority, the program seeks to expedite, streamline, and automate the government approval and registration processes.
Importance of solar projects
For a number of reasons, including their contribution to energy security, economic expansion, and environmental sustainability, solar projects are essential.
A clean and sustainable energy source, solar energy helps to mitigate climate change by lowering dependency on fossil fuels. Additionally, it boosts local economies and creates jobs, which benefits the economy.
