San Miguel, a fourth-class municipality in Leyte, now has greater access to healthcare thanks to the opening of the San Miguel Municipal Hospital.
With the opening of the first hospital in the area, residents of the town will no longer need to go to the city to receive medical care.
Before the municipal hospital was finished, people living in San Miguel had to travel 42 kilometers to Tacloban–the regional capital–or 35 kilometers to the closest hospital in Palo town.
Serving villages
Families from 21 communities can now use the facility, which has been under development for the past two years.
The Department of Health (DOH) designated the 15-bed San Miguel Municipal Hospital as an infirmary, with two physicians, six nurses, six midwives, and ten other staff members assigned to the facility.
The hospital is the first in the town of San Miguel and the second, outside of Tacloban City and Palo town, in the first district of Leyte.
Other services
The new facility provides outpatient services such as general medical, pediatric, obstetrics and gynecology, surgical consultations, pharmacy services, and laboratory services in addition to hospital confinement services.
Minor surgery, dental care, family planning, TB treatment, maternity and child health care, environmental sanitation, health regulatory activities, medico-legal services, and other DOH special programs are among the additional services that are offered as well.
