Eastern Visayas is grappling with a severe dengue outbreak, prompting the Department of Health (DOH) in Region 8 to issue an urgent call for hospitals to take decisive action. With 6,058 cases and 15 deaths reported so far this year, the situation has reached a critical point.
Surge in Dengue Cases Across the Region
The dengue outbreak in Eastern Visayas has escalated dramatically. From January 1 to August 3, 2024, the region has reported 6,058 cases—an alarming 154 percent increase from the 2,386 cases reported during the same period last year. The outbreak has had a significant impact on various provinces, with Leyte recording the highest number of cases. The situation in Ormoc City has become so severe that it was declared a state of calamity on August 8, following a sharp rise in cases affecting numerous villages.
Immediate Need for Dengue Fast Lanes
To address the escalating dengue crisis, the DOH is pressing hospitals to set up specialized fast lanes for suspected dengue cases. These fast lanes are designed to expedite the diagnosis and treatment process, ensuring that patients receive timely care. Health facilities are advised to designate specific areas for dengue patients and to provide training for medical staff to enhance their skills in managing dengue cases according to the latest protocols. This measure is crucial to managing the high volume of cases efficiently.
Public Health Measures and Community Engagement
The DOH is advocating for the implementation of the "5S" strategy to prevent further transmission of dengue. This strategy includes Search and Destroy, Self-Protection Measures, Seeking Early Consultation, Saying Yes to Fogging, and Starting and Sustaining Hydration. The department also calls for active community involvement, including the formation of dengue brigades and regular search and destroy activities to eliminate mosquito-breeding sites. Meanwhile, public awareness is also vital, and individuals experiencing symptoms like abdominal pain, bleeding, or frequent vomiting are urged to seek medical attention promptly.
