With the excitement from the recent Olympic Games still fresh, Filipino Paralympians are now stepping into the spotlight as they begin their journey in Paris. The opening ceremony set a lively tone for their campaign, providing a memorable display of the athletes' spirit.

On August 28, 2024, Team Philippines made a stunning debut at the Paris Paralympic Games. Their parade through the historic Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Élysées was highlighted by striking national costumes crafted from "banaca," a unique blend of banana and abaca fibers. Designed by the renowned Filipino fashion artist Ditta Sandico, these costumes celebrated the nation's cultural heritage. Leading the procession were veteran para swimmer Ernie Gawilan and para archer Agustina Bantiloc, who proudly carried the flag. Their entrance was a visually spectacular and heartfelt display of Filipino pride and tradition.

A Talented and Diverse Team Ready for Competition

This year’s Philippine delegation, the largest since 2012, comprises an exceptional group of athletes poised to make their mark. The team includes wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan, para swimmer Angel Otom, para javelin thrower Cendy Asusano, and para taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin, all supported by a dedicated coaching staff. The coaches are Gershon Bautista (archery), Jonathan Josol (track and field), Berson Buen (taekwondo), and Brian Ong (swimming).

Looking Ahead: Aiming to Build on Past Achievements

As the Paralympic Games progress, the Philippines aims to surpass its previous achievements. With a current tally of two bronze medals—earned by powerlifter Adeline Dumapong in 2000 and para table tennis player Josephine Medina in 2016—the nation is setting its sights on new milestones. Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard Bachmann highlighted the significance of the team's participation in promoting an inclusive sporting community. With a dynamic lineup and an inspiring start, the Philippines is ready to reach new heights and foster national pride on the global stage.
