EJ Obiena announced the end of his 2024 campaign in order to prevent making his back ailment worse, following months of pain and discomfort.

After receiving a diagnosis of a fractured L5 vertebra, he confirmed that he will miss the September Diamond League Final in Belgium, the Weltklasse Zurich in Switzerland, and the ISTAF Berlin in Germany.

Obiena has struggled to prepare for the Olympics in Paris, where he placed fourth but failed to win a medal, due to back concerns in recent months.

Keeping hope and optimism

Obiena is still confident in making a significant comeback next year.

“I'll be BACK,” said EJ in a lengthy Instagram post. “Now that I have identified the source of my back problems this year… I am hoping to return pain-free and ready for the 2025 indoor season!”

With his back needing four weeks to recuperate, Obiena plans to take a complete break. As a result, he will not participate in the September 20 Philippine Pole Vault Competition.

Additionally, he disclosed that the spinal fracture existed even before his participation in the Paris Games.

Ensuring his future

Obiena promised that he would return as soon as possible, but for now he will be patiently recovering from his injury.

“[N]ow I need to make decisions with my head, not my emotions. The best thing to do right now, with ensuring my best future, is to rest and recuperate and come back even stronger,” said Obiena.

“I am going to honor my promise: ‘You’ll see more of me and the Philippine flag will be raised on a global scale.’ It will simply have to wait a bit longer!”
