Scientists have found that two natural compounds may help reverse brain cell ageing and boost the brain’s ability to clear harmful proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Reported by The Independent, the breakthrough suggests a possible non-drug approach to slowing or even preventing age-related cognitive decline.

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most pressing health challenges worldwide, with millions affected by memory loss and declining mental function. Current treatments focus largely on managing symptoms, but researchers are now exploring ways to restore the brain’s natural defenses.

Vitamin B3 and Green Tea Antioxidant as Key Players

The study identified nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a well-known antioxidant found in green tea, as potential allies for brain health. These compounds work by replenishing guanosine triphosphate (GTP), a molecule that powers cellular energy production.

When aged nerve cells were treated with the compounds, GTP levels returned to those typically found in much younger cells remarkably within just 24 hours. This energy restoration is crucial because without sufficient GTP, neurons struggle to perform essential maintenance and repair functions.

Restoring Energy and Protecting the Brain

Perhaps most importantly, the energy boost enabled neurons to resume their natural “cleanup” system. This process includes clearing away amyloid protein clusters, which are considered a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. By improving the clearance of these toxic buildups, the compounds may help protect the brain from further damage and support healthier ageing.

While scientists stress that further research is needed to determine dosage and delivery methods for humans, the findings represent a significant step forward. Instead of relying solely on pharmaceutical interventions, targeting the brain’s energy systems may provide a safer and more sustainable way to fight Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
