The Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) has recently unveiled its newest invention– the Dual Drum Composter, a cutting-edge method for effective organic waste management.

The technology, which is designed to maximize microbial activity and speed up the decomposition process, creates high-quality compost quickly in just a span of few weeks to several months, depending on the waste content and ambient conditions.

Senior science research specialist Anna Marie Daigan of the DOST's Cavite Field agency stated that her agency will actively promote the two-drum composting system throughout the province.

The technology’s potential

According to Daigan, the widespread implementation of this waste management system in local government units (LGUs) will boost resource efficiency and resilience in Cavite, while lowering the environmental impact of trash disposal.

Dual drum composting has economic and environmental advantages, especially for rural areas. Farmers can decrease their need for artificial fertilizers and increase crop yields by creating organic compost locally.

The technology also offers an affordable option for managing organic waste and is easily obtainable from approved manufacturers. It may be tailored to the unique requirements of homes participating in urban gardening projects.

Seminar on the latest composting technology

In line with the release of the new Dual Drum Composter technology, the DOST–Cavite recently held a Technology Opportunity (TechOps) Seminar last March. Spearheaded by DOST-ITDI experts David L. Herrera and Bernadette Garcia, the training marked a significant step towards sustainable waste management practices.

This effort seeks to promote not only environmental sustainability at the household level but also transform waste management techniques, making them more efficient.
