Pharmaceutical company GSK has launched on March 12 a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness about shingles, a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. The campaign seeks to educate the public about the risks, impact, and prevention strategies associated with this debilitating condition.

Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster, shares its viral origins with chickenpox, lying dormant in nerve tissue and reactivating later in life. GSK's campaign emphasizes the potential impact of shingles on one's quality of life and the importance of seeking medical advice for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Central to GSK's efforts is a dedicated website addressing knowledge gaps about shingles, along with commissioned sculptures illustrating the physical and emotional toll of the condition. Additionally, video content will be disseminated across various platforms to reach a wide audience.

Expert Insights

During the campaign launch, dermatologist Irene Robredo-Vitas likened the appearance of shingles rashes to "dew drops on a rose petal." The campaign highlights statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, indicating that long-term nerve pain affects around 30% of shingles patients, with potential vision loss in those infected near the eye.

Infectious diseases specialist Dr. Rontgene Solante emphasized that shingles can affect anyone who has had chickenpox, particularly those over 50. Various factors, including underlying health conditions such as diabetes and steroid use, can contribute to shingles reactivation.

Personal Testimonies

Broadcast journalist Karen Davila, a shingles survivor, shared her experiences with the condition, stressing the excruciating pain it caused. Davila and GSK are collaborating on an information awareness packet about shingles to be released on her YouTube channel.

Nette Garcia, another shingles survivor, recounted her four encounters with the illness, highlighting its recurrence and the impact it had on her life, especially during the pandemic.

Preventive Measures

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent shingles and its complications. GSK's shingles vaccine, Shingrix, is recommended for adults aged 50 and older, including those who have previously received another shingles vaccine called Zostavax. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and practicing good hygiene can help reduce the risk of shingles.
