The Traslacion, an integral part of the Feast of the Black Nazarene in the Philippines, made a triumphant return on January 09, 2024, after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This traditional parade involves the revered procession of the 400-year-old black image of Jesus Christ or Nazareno from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church, encapsulating the rich religious history dating back to the Spanish colonial era.
An astounding participation of 6,532,501 individuals in the procession was recorded by the Quiapo Church communications office. Despite the significant crowd, the Department of Health (DOH) documented 751 injuries, with authorities highlighting the absence of incidents related to law enforcement, security, or general safety during the event.
Miraculous Devotion and Healing Beliefs
Devotees actively participate in the procession, considering the push and pull of the crowd as a vital aspect of their devotion. The belief in the Black Nazarene's miraculous healing powers is fervent, with the touch of the statue or the attached ropes believed to bring about healing for incurable ailments and bestow good fortune upon the faithful and their loved ones.
Enhanced Traslacion Experience
This year's Traslacion witnessed organizational improvements that contributed to its efficient conclusion. Adviser Alex Irasga reported the Black Nazarene image was in excellent condition after being removed from the newly designed carriage enclosed with tempered glass. Enhanced features, including improved wheels, lights for nighttime visibility, closed-circuit television cameras, and a sound system, ensured both protection and an enriched experience for devotees. The dedicated presence of 20 members from Hijos del Nazareno added an extra layer of safeguarding throughout the procession.
