Bacolod City is embracing resilience as the 45th MassKara Festival extends its celebration until October 31. This decision follows the disruptions caused by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, which affected both the festivities and local vendors last week. The extended dates allow residents and visitors to fully engage in the vibrant celebration.
Supporting Local Vendors in Difficult Times
In a compassionate response, Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez announced PHP 2.5 million in food vouchers aimed at assisting vendors impacted by the storm. “We recognize that this situation is beyond our control, but we are committed to supporting those affected,” he expressed. The city council will oversee the distribution of these vouchers, ensuring that those unable to partake in the festival still receive vital assistance.
A Call for Community Unity and Fundraising Initiatives
Alongside the food voucher initiative, the MassKara Festival is actively contributing to relief efforts for storm victims. During the MassKarade Ball, festival chairperson Jojie Dingcong collaborated with the GMA Kapuso Foundation to raise funds for affected areas. “We stand in solidarity with our nation,” Dingcong affirmed, highlighting the importance of community unity. As the festival approaches its final weekend, Bacolod is poised to celebrate not only its rich heritage but also its unyielding spirit in the face of adversity.
Exciting Events Ahead
Originally scheduled to conclude on October 27, the festival will now highlight events at three key venues: Bacolod Public Plaza, Bacolod City Government Center, and Megaworld’s The Upper East. The festival culminated on October 27 at the Paglaum Sports Complex, where Barangay Granada triumphed in the Street Dance and Arena Competition, winning over PHP 1 million in prizes. This victory marks their status as a two-time grand slam winner, totaling six MassKara Festival championships.
Mayor Benitez commended their outstanding performance, stating, “They truly delivered a spectacular show.” Barangay Bata claimed the first runner-up position, earning PHP 500,000, while Barangay 12 took second runner-up, receiving PHP 300,000.
