Dumaguete City is scheduled to open two new bridges in December, which the mayor said will relieve traffic in the Negros Oriental provincial capital.
“These (new) bridges traversing Banica River are a big help to regulate and ease traffic, especially in the población area where people going to the outskirts no longer need to pass through the city proper,” Remollo said.
Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo gave his guarantee following days of heavy traffic in the city, particularly during the 123rd Founders Day celebration of Silliman University.
What to expect from the project
With a budget of PHP25.9 million, the new bridges will link the villages of Balugo and Candauay. Meanwhile, the bridge that will cross barangays Junob and Batinguel would cost PHP21.4 million.
The mayor stated that although the project has not yet gone to bid, the city has been promoting a lease-to-own program for more than five years.
Relocating government offices on land owned by the city government in the outer barangays is another idea to reduce traffic congestion in Dumaguete.
Another bridge
According to the mayor, a second bridge project of PHP30 million that would link the barangays of Taclobo and Tabuc-tubig is being recommended for approval by the city council.
Remollo, meanwhile, expressed hope that the city's planned PHP70 million traffic signal system will be implemented this year.
