The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has built farm-to-market roads worth PHP72.1 million, which are thought to encourage growth in the rural areas of two cities in Negros Occidental.

According to DPWH-Western Visayas (Region 6), the concrete roads that have been finished are located in three barangays in San Carlos City, one in the nearby town of Calatrava in the north, and another barangay in Himamaylan City in the south.

Roads benefit communities

Residents of Sitio Handalago in Barangay Nataban, San Carlos City, are now benefiting from the 1.04-kilometer, two-lane road that was built at a cost of PHP10 million.

Additionally, the PHP20 million, 1.9-kilometer, two-lane road in Sitio Maragoos, Barangay Rizal, is serving communities in the area.

Worth PHP10 million, the two-lane, 600-meter paved road in Barangay Prosperidad is also now crucial in rural development.

Meanwhile, residents and farmers of the northern Negros town are served by the 1.36-kilometer, PHP20 million two-lane road project in Calatrava.

Providing more efficient routes

The PHP12.1 million concrete road project in Himamaylan City improves accessibility and mobility for locals and farmers by connecting Sitio Campuntong to Sitio Abud in Barangay Antonio.

With the addition of slope and shoulder protection in some locations, the 514-lineal-meter road will shorten travel times and guarantee the secure and effective transportation of agricultural goods.

District Engineer Juan Alfonso Jorbina Sr. stated that these road projects, which are being carried out by the DPWH Negros Occidental Sub District Engineering Office, also offer a more effective path, addressing transportation issues that people in rural communities confront, especially during rainy days.
