In Negros Occidental's 2024 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Meet (WVRAA), a remarkable student from the Special Education (SPED) Training Center in Cadiz City stood out. Despite facing physical challenges, 10-year-old Zach Lucas Obsioma, diagnosed with phocomelia syndrome, displayed remarkable resilience and talent. He not only clinched one but three gold medals in the para swimming competitions.

Defying Expectations, Setting Records

Zach's journey to success is as inspiring as it is remarkable. Born with a rare birth condition that affects limb development, Zach didn't let his physical limitations define him. With determination as his driving force, he conquered the 50-meter backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle events, capturing the hearts of spectators and fellow athletes alike.

A Community's Pride and Support

Behind every champion stands a dedicated support system, and Zach is no exception. From his coaches, Max Fermales and Lyn Rabuya, who tirelessly train him at Laura’s Beach Resort, to the unwavering encouragement of his family and community, Zach's triumph is a testament to the power of collective belief and perseverance.

As Zach returns home to Cadiz City, he carries not just the weight of his gold medals, but the hopes and dreams of a city inspired by his resilience. Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr.'s words echo the sentiment felt by many: Zach is more than a swimmer; he's a symbol of persistence and resilience, a beacon of hope for all who face challenges.

In honoring Zach's achievements, Cadiz City reaffirms its commitment to supporting and celebrating the triumphs of every individual, regardless of the obstacles they may encounter. As Zach prepares to receive a hero's welcome, his journey reminds us all that with determination and support, anything is possible.
