In a stride towards sustainability, Dr. Noel Peter Tan, a distinguished DOST Balik Scientist, has spearheaded a pioneering initiative at the University of San Agustin (USA) in Iloilo. Dr. Tan's research focuses on developing plant-based, biodegradable packaging solutions derived from discarded plant materials.

Dr. Tan, with over a decade of expertise in Applied Chemistry, heads the Center for Advanced New Materials, Engineering, and Emerging Technologies (CANMEET) at USA. Under his guidance, CANMEET has become the vanguard of material science and emerging technologies in Western Visayas.

Unveiling the Innovation

The revelation of Dr. Tan's project occurred during his Exit Report Presentation in Iloilo City, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of eco-conscious packaging alternatives. His endeavor centers on the creation of nano-enabled bioplastics from regenerated cellulose, offering a robust and environmentally friendly substitute for conventional plastics.

DOST Undersecretary for R&D Leah J. Buendia lauds Dr. Tan's contributions, emphasizing the pivotal role of Balik Scientists in driving innovation for national development. With his proficiency in nanoscience and nanotechnology, Dr. Tan exemplifies the transformative potential of scientific expertise in addressing pressing environmental concerns.

In addition to his groundbreaking work on biodegradable packaging, Dr. Tan leads the Membrane Technology for Seawater Desalination Program at CANMEET. By harnessing solar energy to power membrane-distillation systems, this initiative seeks to revolutionize sustainable water generation, offering a lifeline to communities grappling with water scarcity.

Cultivating Future Innovators

Dr. Tan's impact extends beyond his research endeavors. He has crafted innovative course syllabi and provided invaluable mentorship to students, igniting a passion for STEM disciplines. His tenure as a Balik Scientist exemplifies the program's mission to cultivate scientific excellence and foster knowledge-sharing among Filipino scholars.

As Dr. Tan's tenure draws to a close, his legacy of innovation and mentorship leaves an indelible mark on USA's research domain. With his expertise and dedication, Dr. Tan embodies the spirit of scientific inquiry and collaboration, propelling the Philippines towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.
