Nestled in the heart of the Visayan Sea, between Panay and Negros islands, Guimaras beckons with its stunning landscapes and pristine beaches. This province in the Western Visayas region is not just a feast for the eyes but also a haven for those seeking the extraordinary – and it's all topped off with a sweet surprise.

Accessible by boat from Iloilo City, Guimaras has become a sought-after destination for tourists craving a taste of natural beauty and, of course, the renowned sweet mangoes that have elevated the province to the status of the "Mango Capital of the Philippines."

The Sweet Triumph: Geographical Indication (GI) Certification

In a sweet victory for Guimaras, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) awarded the coveted certificate of geographical indication (GI) registration in 2023. This certification recognizes Guimaras mangoes as the “sweetest of the sweet”, adding an official seal to the island's culinary prowess.

According to the certificate signed by Bureau of Trademarks Director Jesus Antonio Z. Roz, Guimaras mangoes are a typical carabao variety – shaped like an ellipsoid with a rounded crown and an oblong end. From its green unripe state to the luscious yellow-orange ripeness, the journey of these mangoes is a visual and gastronomic delight.

A Symphony of Flavors

Described as having a meaty, smooth, firm, juicy, and non-fibrous flesh, Guimaras mangoes set a high standard for quality. The certificate specifies that the skin should bear no more than 10 percent blemishes, ensuring each bite is a burst of perfection.

Earning the moniker "sweetest mango" isn't an exaggeration. With a sweetness level ranging from 16-degree Brix and beyond, Guimaras mangoes deliver an unparalleled taste experience. The local term "marabo" perfectly captures the unique texture—a harmonious blend of crunchiness, sweetness, and a hint of sourness that sets these mangoes apart.

Nature's Gift: Topography and Flavor Fusion

The quality and characteristics of Guimaras mangoes owe their excellence to the diverse topography of the province. From flat terrains to steep slopes, the elevation proves to be a crucial factor in cultivating the carabao mango variety. Guimaras, indeed, is a mango paradise shaped by the very land that cradles its sweetest treasure.
