The Philippines is celebrating a major conservation milestone with three of its natural parks officially named ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHP). Announced by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) in November 2024, the Apo Reef Natural Park, Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary, and Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park now join an exclusive network of Southeast Asia’s top protected areas. This recognition underscores the Philippines' commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity and reinforces its role as a key player in global conservation efforts.
Apo Reef: A Marine Wonder
Located off Occidental Mindoro, Apo Reef is the largest contiguous coral reef system in the Philippines and the second-largest in the world. Spanning over 27,000 hectares, it is a haven for diverse marine life, including endangered species like the Green Sea Turtle and Whale Shark. Its inclusion in the AHP network ensures continued protection and international support for this vital marine ecosystem.
Turtle Islands: A Critical Nesting Ground for Sea Turtles
The Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in the Sulu Archipelago, is a crucial nesting site for the Green Sea Turtle, the only major nesting ground of its kind in the ASEAN region. Recognized for its "Extremely High" biodiversity, the sanctuary is a joint conservation effort between the Philippines and Malaysia. Being named an ASEAN Heritage Park elevates its protection and enhances efforts to safeguard sea turtles and their habitat.
Balinsasayao Twin Lakes: A Biodiversity Hotspot
Nestled in Negros Oriental, the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park is a biodiversity-rich area, home to rare species like the Visayan Leopard Cat and the Philippine Tube-nosed Fruit Bat. The park's designation as an ASEAN Heritage Park highlights its ecological significance and bolsters conservation initiatives to protect its unique wildlife and ecosystems.
With these three parks joining the ASEAN Heritage network, the Philippines continues to strengthen its role as a steward of Southeast Asia's natural heritage.
