At the 2024 Mezinárodní charitativní trh ambasád (International Embassies Charity Market) in Prague, the Philippines' booth became a standout attraction, with hundreds of visitors lining up to purchase South Sea pearls. The market–a beloved winter tradition in the Czech capital–brought together over 40 countries to showcase their cultures, crafts, and culinary specialties. Yet it was the Philippines' pearl collection that truly captivated attendees, offering a rare and elegant gift option for the holiday season.

A Taste of the Philippines: Food, Crafts, and Pearls

The Philippine booth offered a vibrant mix of food and crafts, including dried mangoes, instant noodles, and traditional woven bags. However, it was the South Sea pearl collection that stole the show. Displayed in a dedicated exhibition room, the pearls drew a steady stream of visitors, many looking for unique Christmas gifts. Czech public relations professor Denisa Hejlová has made shopping for Philippine pearls a holiday tradition. “I love that the items here are sold for charity,” she shared, showing off the matching pearl bracelets she bought for herself and her daughter.

The Rare Beauty of South Sea Pearls

Curated by Samuel D. Bernal, the Philippine pearl collection highlighted the luxury and craftsmanship behind South Sea pearls. “These pearls take years to reach their full size,” Bernal explained. Among the most coveted items was a golden pearl necklace priced at over P845,000 ($14,400). “Only about one percent of the pearls collected are this perfect,” Bernal added, underlining the rarity and exclusivity of the pieces.

Cultural Exchange and Charity in the Heart of Prague

The charity market, organized by the Diplomatic Spouses Association of the Czech Republic, is a celebration of both culture and community. With over 3,000 visitors expected, the event raises funds for local Czech charities. Last year, the market raised over CZK 1 million, which supported several children’s organizations. For many attendees, like Anna Curtis Lit, the market was not just a place to shop but an opportunity to engage in meaningful cultural exchange while supporting a good cause.
