Pinoy Chess Masters Bag Two Golds In World Senior Chess Championship

The Philippines completed its campaign in the 32nd World Senior Chess Championships on Friday, winning two gold and one bronze medal at the Hotel Villa Baleira on Porto Santo Island, Portugal.

The World Chess Federation, or FIDE, created the World Senior Chess Championship as an annual chess competition in 1991.

Filipino pride

International Master Chito Danilo Garma of Sampaloc, Manila, won the Blitz tournament in the 50+ category with an outstanding 8-1 record.

Mario Mangubat, a FIDE Master and native of Minglanilla village in Cebu, won the 65+ Rapid tournament with 4.5 points from six games.

With 5.5 points, Mangubat also won the bronze Blitz medal in the 65+ division.

Completing the team

Garma finished 24th out of 80 players in the 50 and over division, International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad was ranked 46th, and Mangubat was ranked 48th out of 89 entries in the 65 over division in the conventional time control format.

With assistance from the Philippine Sports Commission, National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. led and coached the Philippine squad.
