The Philippines finished second overall in the first-ever Asia Pacific Trail Running Championships, which took place in Ulju, South Korea, from October 23 to 27.
In three hours and forty-seven minutes, trail star Johnray Onifa won the gold medal in the men's 40-kilometer short trail division, leading the Filipino trail runners. Onifa defeated formidable competitors from Australia, China, and Japan.
How Other Filipino Athletes Fared in the Competition
Highlighted by Onifa's brilliant finish, the Philippines placed second in the men's short trail competition, behind champion Japan, along with Randolf Gonzales in sixth place, Romnick Tongkaling in 12th place, and Godwin Mirar in 17th place.
The Philippines also placed second behind Australia with their long trail (80 km) team, which included Larry Apolinario in sixth place, Arnie Macarenas in ninth, Rhys Pawid in 23rd, Roberto Cain in the 30th, and Paul Brillantes in the 32nd.
In the short trail competition, the Philippines women's team, which included Elizabeth Dangadang (6th) and Angelie Cabalo (16th), placed fourth.
Christabel Martes (11th), Trisha Reyes (16th), Noemi Fernandez (21st), and Angelica Alejo (26th) made up the nation's long trail women's team, which likewise placed fourth, behind Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia.
Nurturing Filipino trail runners
With this current success, the Philippine Trail Running Association (PHILTRA) is dedicated to fostering and developing talent throughout the country in the future.
“The dedication and resilience of our athletes have been evident throughout this journey. As we look towards future competitions, we are excited about the prospect of Olympic inclusion in trail running for Brisbane 2032,” said Atty. James Roldan, PHILTRA President.
