Recent violent skirmishes between Thailand and Cambodia have refocused international attention on a border dispute rooted not only in regional rivalry but also in colonial cartography and centuries-old history. Here’s a breakdown of the long and short of the conflict.

A History Steeped in Empire and Colonial Maps

The boundaries separating modern-day Thailand and Cambodia can be traced back to the Franco-Siamese treaties of the early 20th century. In 1904, France (which then controlled Cambodia) and Siam agreed to demarcate the border along the watershed line of the Dângrêk Mountains.

A year later, the 1907 treaty formalized some territorial changes and led to colonial officials drawing detailed maps, most notably a French-drawn "Annex I" map that placed the Preah Vihear Temple firmly within Cambodian territory. Thailand initially acquiesced to the map but later contested it, arguing that it violated the watershed principle agreed upon in the earlier treaty.

The Temple in Question: Preah Vihear

Perched atop a cliff of the Dângrêk Mountains, the 11th-century Hindu temple of Preah Vihear holds both spiritual and symbolic weight. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in 1962 that the temple, and adjacent land, belonged to Cambodia, citing Thailand’s prior, unopposed acceptance of the 1908 French-drawn map.

The site’s UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2008 further intensified tensions, leading to repeated armed confrontations in the years that followed.

Colonial Decisions, Modern Flashpoints

Tensions escalated anew in 2025. A border clash that occurred in May left a Cambodian soldier dead, prompting a deadly chain of retaliation that saw both countries mobilize troops, suspend trade, and trade allegations of aggression and ceasefire violations. ASEAN has intervened, deploying observers to monitor compliance as diplomatic pressure from global powers mounted.

This volatile situation underscores how imperfect colonial-era boundaries continue to inflame nationalism. Preah Vihear is more than an archaeological gem; it is a potent symbol of sovereignty for both nations and a stark reminder of the lingering power of historical cartography in modern geopolitics.

Implications for the Philippines

While the Thailand–Cambodia border dispute is a regional matter, analysts warn that instability in mainland Southeast Asia can have ripple effects across ASEAN, including the Philippines. Disruptions in trade routes, shifts in defense alliances, and potential economic slowdowns in the region could affect Philippine exports and investment flows.

Security experts note that the situation is also a reminder for the Philippines to strengthen its own border and maritime security posture, particularly given its own ongoing territorial challenges in the West Philippine Sea.
