Starting Friday, June 20, students across Metro Manila can enjoy a 50 percent discount on all train rides, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced. The move comes as part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ease commuting costs for students and their families as the new school year begins.
The discount applies to all major rail lines: LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.
Supporting Students and Families
“This is the President’s order to help students and their parents, especially now that classes have resumed,” Dizon said during an interview at LRT-2 Antipolo station. Previously, students were entitled to a 20 percent discount, but with the new policy, the rate has been increased to 50 percent.
Dizon added that the discount covers all students, including those taking postgraduate studies. Students only need to present a valid student ID, certificate of registration, or enrollment to avail of the reduced fare.
The discount applies daily—including weekends and holidays—providing consistent savings for commuting students.
Discount Applies to Single-Journey Tickets Only
For now, the 50 percent fare reduction is only available for single-journey tickets purchased at station counters. It is not yet applicable to Beep cards used by regular commuters.
“Technically, the Beep system can’t process this just yet, but we’re working on a solution that we hope to roll out in the coming months,” Dizon explained.
Despite this limitation, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) assured students that efforts are ongoing to integrate the discount into the electronic system soon.
