Jordan Clarkson Makes History As First Filipino-American NBA Champion

Jordan Clarkson has etched his name in history as the first Filipino-American to win an NBA championship after the New York Knicks edged the San Antonio Spurs, 94–91, in a gripping Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The win completed a dramatic series for New York, marking the franchise’s first NBA title in 53 years. Though Clarkson played limited minutes, he still made an impact off the bench with 6 points and 1 rebound in just 6 minutes of action.

Before the game, Clarkson had already added drama to the Finals with a confident remark that now feels almost fitting: “One of us two [is] taking a championship back home to the Philippines and representing that well,” he said, referring to Spurs rookie Dylan Harper.

Brunson Leads Knicks, Harper Shows Promise in Defeat

While Clarkson’s milestone made headlines, the Finals spotlight belonged to Jalen Brunson, who delivered a masterclass performance with 45 points and earned Finals MVP honors.

The Knicks leaned heavily on Brunson down the stretch as they pulled off another strong comeback to seal the close win and clinch the championship.

On the other side, Spurs rookie Dylan Harper proved why he is considered one of the league’s rising stars. He finished with 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, showing composure beyond his years despite the loss.

Clarkson later praised Harper’s maturity and steady play throughout the season, saying, “He has been really good throughout the whole year… him being so young and having so much poise throughout this whole playoffs.”

Pride for Filipino Fans as Clarkson Adds to His Legacy

For Filipino basketball supporters, Clarkson’s title carries deeper meaning beyond the NBA stage.

The 34-year-old guard has long embraced his Filipino heritage, previously suiting up for the Philippine national team in the 2023 FIBA World Cup and the 2018 Asian Games. His NBA championship now adds another milestone to a career that continues to bridge the NBA and Filipino basketball pride.
