The United Nations Association of the Philippines (UNAP) has awarded Senator Cynthia Villar with its prestigious Human Rights Award. The recognition highlights her unwavering commitment to poverty eradication and biodiversity preservation, key components of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In her acceptance speech at the award ceremony held at the Manila Hotel on March 26, Senator Villar expressed gratitude to the UNAP for acknowledging her efforts. She shed light on her journey, dedicated to fostering sustainable livelihoods, environmental protection, and support for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

"Let me tell you about my journey toward achieving these SDG goals: With my husband Manny, we established in 1992 the Villar Foundation, which is a nonstock, nonprofit organization to create sustainable livelihood, protect the environment and help OFWs,” she stated.

Environmental Conservation Initiatives

Senator Villar emphasized the foundation's significant strides in environmental protection, including the establishment of the Las Piñas-Paranaque Wetland Park and the implementation of free agricultural training in various locations across the Philippines. Additionally, the foundation's livelihood projects spanning over 3,000 sites nationwide have played a pivotal role in promoting sustainable practices and economic empowerment.

Meanwhile, under the Sagip-Ilog Program, aimed at revitalizing the Las Piñas and Zapote rivers, the Villar Foundation adopted a holistic approach. This included initiatives such as waste management education, riverbank re-greening activities, and the creation of a green social enterprise. Notably, the program's success garnered international acclaim, with the foundation receiving the prestigious UN Water for Life Award in 2011.

Other Recognition and Awards

Over the years, Senator Villar's relentless efforts have been recognized through various accolades. These include the Villar Foundation Awards for Poverty Reduction, the Villar Foundation Youth Awards, and commendations from government bodies such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Notably, in 2018, she was honored with the title "Kampeon ng Katubigan" for her pivotal role in protecting waterways and wetland areas.

The Villar Foundation's endeavors have also transcended national borders, earning international recognition. In 2022, the foundation was honored with the title of World's Best Environmental Projects, further cementing Senator Villar's reputation as a global champion for environmental conservation.

Upholding Sustainable Development Goals

Senator Villar's multifaceted approach to sustainable development encompasses not only environmental conservation but also poverty eradication and community empowerment. Through initiatives such as the annual OFW and Family Summit and the Sagip-Ilog Program, she has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to improving the lives of Filipinos while safeguarding the nation's natural resources.
