Taiwan is urging cities worldwide to take the initiative to support investments in renewable energy to mitigate the effects of climate change. This is in line with the administration putting regulations into place to cut greenhouse gas emissions and switch to more ecologically friendly energy sources.

The blueprint

Increased use of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, the promotion of green industries and low-carbon technologies, and a fair transition for communities and workers affected by the switch to newer energy sources are all part of Taiwan's government's plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The plan, "Taiwan's Pathway to Net-Zero Emissions in 2050," would prioritize green technology research and development as well as the enactment of laws that will further the country's carbon reduction objectives.

In the meantime, Kung Ming-hsin, the Minister of Taiwan's National Development Council, is pleading with people to alter their lives in order to significantly cut carbon emissions globally.

The government of Taiwan is pushing a number of lifestyle changes on its people, including encouraging carpooling, cycling, walking, and public transportation as a way to lessen reliance on personal vehicles.

Additionally, they want to provide financial incentives for homes to install energy-efficient appliances; and promote recyclables and composting as ways to manage waste and encourage responsible consumption.

Current actions

By 2025, the government also hopes to reduce its dependency on imported gas and oil, lower carbon emissions to 2000 levels, and phase out nuclear power, which presently generates about 15% of the region's electricity.

The nation intends to use a combination of offshore wind and solar power to create about 27GW of additional renewable electricity capacity in order to meet its renewable energy objective.

The government has been quick to put forth an alluring framework in an attempt to entice foreign investors, mindful that it is in competition with its neighbors, Japan, Thailand, China, India, and the Philippines, all of whom have adopted green energy policies faster, for investment funds
