Team Philippines has made a remarkable showing at the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO) held in Chiang Mai from February 21 to 24, 2025, bringing home three world stars and multiple prestigious awards.
The Philippine team was led by standout performers Brian Jansen Vallejo from Sarrat National High School in Ilocos Norte, Yleisha Neil Sumo from General Emilio Aguinaldo National High School in Cavite, and Achillas Maximus Cristobal from Operation Brotherhood Montessori Center in Pampanga. Vallejo, a Secondary 3 student, earned the World Champion title, a gold medal, and top awards like the Leibniz Award for Algebra and the Pascal Award for Combinatorics. Sumo and Cristobal also claimed top honors, contributing to Team Philippines' success.
Coach Michael Malvar praised the team's achievements, saying, "They are living proof that with hard work and passion, greatness knows no boundaries.This victory at TIMO adds to the Philippines’ consistent success in international math competitions.” Malvar encouraged the team to set even higher goals for the future.
Sarrat National High School Leads the Way
Sarrat National High School was a key player in the Philippine team’s success, with Vallejo leading the charge. Along with Vallejo’s World Champion title, Allen Iver Barroga earned the World First Runner-Up award, multiple gold medals, and special awards like the Leibniz and Euclid Awards. The school’s impressive performance also included several silver and merit awards.
The TIMO Finals serve as a qualifier for the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) 2025, and the strong performance of the Filipino mathletes points to even greater success in the future.
