Three well-loved Filipino rice dishes have earned a spot on the international culinary stage. Arroz caldo, lugaw, and champorado were recently included in TasteAtlas’ list of the Top 100 Porridges in the World, highlighting how deeply comforting Filipino food resonates worldwide.

Among the three, arroz caldo stood out, clinching second place overall. This Filipino take on congee is famous for its ginger-flavored broth, tender chicken, and warm toppings like calamansi, scallions, or garlic chips. For Filipinos, a bowl of arroz caldo isn’t just nourishing; it’s soul-soothing, perfect for rainy days or when comfort is needed most.

Lugaw and Champorado: Everyday Classics

Placing 10th on the list is lugaw, a dish that many Filipinos grew up with. Often served for breakfast or to the sick, lugaw is beloved for its soft, easily digestible texture and comforting simplicity. It’s more than just a porridge—it’s a symbol of home, care, and warmth.

Meanwhile, champorado brought sweetness to the rankings, securing the 19th spot. Made with glutinous rice and cocoa, it’s traditionally served with milk and sometimes paired with dried salted fish, creating a unique sweet-salty balance. Whether eaten as a morning meal or a hearty merienda, champorado remains a nostalgic treat across generations.

Celebrating Filipino Cuisine on the World Stage

While Indonesia’s bubur ayam claimed the top spot, the recognition of these Filipino classics reinforces the country’s growing presence in the global culinary scene. Just last October 2024, TasteAtlas also named chicken inasal as the top Filipino food, further showcasing the richness of our cuisine.

For Filipinos, the inclusion of arroz caldo, lugaw, and champorado in a global ranking is more than an accolade; it’s a proud reminder that our comfort foods, once enjoyed in simple kitchens and neighborhood eateries, are now celebrated worldwide for their heart, history, and flavor.
