The Department of Health (DOH) and the Climate Change Commission (CCC) are seeking to strengthen their cooperation to tackle the issues brought on by the effects of climate change on public health.
Acknowledging the significant relationship between climate change and health, DOH Secretary Teodoro “Ted” Herbosa and CCC Vice Chairperson and Executive Director Robert E.A. Borje talked about the effects of climate change on health.
Also discussed were the ways to coordinate further and guarantee the coherence of the policies, programs, and other initiatives carried out by both organizations.
Learning from the past
Borje emphasized in a news release that the nation needs a flexible and robust healthcare system, citing the consequences of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
“Our experiences have shown us that our well-being is intricately linked to the health of our planet. Recognizing this connection is key to building a resilient and sustainable future for all," Borje said.
Meanwhile, Herbosa pledged to integrate climate considerations into its strategy, developing a more comprehensive approach to healthcare that tackles the shifting natural issues.
"The DOH is taking significant steps towards a sustainable and resilient healthcare system. Our plans include constructing environmentally friendly hospitals, incorporating climate change adaptation into our disaster risk reduction initiatives," he said.
Areas for partnerships
Developing and implementing policies and initiatives related to climate health and promoting public awareness and community education have been identified as important areas for partnerships.
Regarding climate resilience, one of the focus sectors being worked on by the CCC is health as part of its National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
These areas aligned with existing frameworks and policies, including the Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028, the National Adaptation Plan being developed by CCC, and the ongoing implementation of the Universal Healthcare Act.
Meanwhile, developing campaigns and policies related to climate health and stepping up public awareness initiatives are potential areas of cooperation for both organizations.
