The municipality of Malitbog emerged as one of the biggest winners in the Kaamulan Festival 2026 competitions, capturing the championship in the ground presentation category and earning multiple recognitions across major events. Its performance stood out for its strong cultural storytelling rooted in Higaonon heritage, paired with powerful choreography and visual presentation.
Malitbog secured the top spot in the ground presentation, placed second runner-up in street dancing, and dominated the special awards with four out of five recognitions. These included Cultural Recognition in Integrity and Relevance, Excellence in Cultural Narrative and Meaning, Excellence in Movement Traditions and Cultural Expressions, and Excellence in Traditional Attire and Cultural Adornment.
A Story of Origins and Balance
The centerpiece of Malitbog’s performance was the narrative “Kalumbata and the Sacred Mt. Minbakusan,” which reflects the Higaonon people’s origin story and their deep connection with nature and spirituality.
After a great flood, early communities rebuilt their lives on fertile land revealed by receding waters. Guided by Magbabaya, they were entrusted with Kalumbata, a giant eagle that transforms into Buoy Gahumon, carrying a rice stock symbolizing life and abundance. Through planting and cooperation, the land flourished.
Harmony is later disrupted by Bakasan, a colossal serpent that brings destruction. Despite the efforts of the Alimaongs, the people are overpowered. In a climactic transformation, Kalumbata becomes Buoy Gahumon and defeats the serpent, whose body becomes Mt. Minbakusan—a lasting symbol of balance between destruction and renewal.
Dance as Living Heritage
The story concludes in celebration through traditional dances such as Dugso, Binanog, Pangaso, Mangatiyapi, and Kinayukay. These movements bring cultural memory to life, reflecting identity, resilience, and ancestral connection.
