P1.7-M Nursery Facility to Boost Agricultural Learning in Davao del Sur

A new nursery facility worth P1.7 million is set to give students and communities in Davao del Sur more opportunities to learn and engage in modern agriculture.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Davao Region turned over the facility to the Davao del Sur State College (DSSC) on Thursday at its Kapoc Extension Campus in Matanao. The project was funded through the DA’s High-Value Crops Development Program.

Bringing Agriculture Closer to Students

The new facility is expected to serve as a hands-on learning space for DSSC students, allowing them to put agricultural lessons into practice.

DSSC President Augie Fuentes said the nursery reflects the college’s commitment to agricultural development and collaboration with government agencies. She described it as a learning hub where students can develop practical skills in plant propagation, nursery management, and sustainable crop production.

Connecting Education and Community

For the DA, the project goes beyond providing students with a place to grow crops.

DA-Davao Regional Technical Director for Operations Marie Ann Constantino said partnerships with state universities and colleges are important in advancing food security and building a more resilient agricultural sector.

She said providing schools with modern agricultural facilities can help connect research and technical instruction with the needs of local communities.

Supporting Davao del Sur’s Agriculture

The nursery is also expected to support DSSC’s crop production initiatives and contribute to wider community development in Davao del Sur.

Constantino said the facility marks the start of its operational phase, with the DA and DSSC working together to maximize its potential for agricultural education, local production, and community empowerment.

Through the project, students and surrounding communities are expected to gain greater access to practical agricultural knowledge and resources that can help strengthen local food production.
