Officials have begun construction on the first phase of an ecotourism park in Sitio Brazil, Barangay Mat-i, Surigao City, a project designed to boost the local economy and encourage environmentally friendly travel.
It is anticipated that the ecotourism park will improve local communities' quality of life, especially in coastal areas, foster environmental protection, and generate long-term employment possibilities.
Once a guerilla strong hold
The local government noted that Sitio Brazil, which was formerly a guerrilla stronghold, is currently undergoing a transformation into a flourishing ecotourism refuge.
The local government also emphasized in a statement how Surigao locals' closeness to the Pacific Ocean makes them susceptible to natural disasters like typhoons.
“Limited tourism infrastructure has made it difficult to retain local and foreign tourists, who often opt to visit nearby areas like Dinagat and Siargao Islands,” the city government said.
The park’s budget
With funding from the Department of Budget and Management's (DBM) Local Government Support Fund (LGSF)–Green Green Green Program, the PHP10.2-million park will have recreational amenities and facilities that will draw locals, families, and outdoor lovers.
Future phases will introduce an adventure zone with zip lines, an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) track, and extended nature trails to attract more visitors, according to Surigao City Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao II.
