The tragedy struck particularly hard in Brgy. Masara, a gold-mining village nestled in Maco, Davao del Sur. Here, landslides claimed the lives of 98 individuals, blatantly underlining the vulnerability of communities to the fury of nature.
Human Factors Amplify Disaster
Richard Ybañez, chief research specialist at the University of the Philippines Resilience Institute, emphasized that merely attributing the disaster's severity to rainfall overlooks critical human-induced elements. Factors such as rampant deforestation, prevalent poverty affecting communities' coping mechanisms, and insufficient early warning systems significantly contributed to the calamitous outcomes.
