President Bongbong Marcos Jr.'s signing of Republic Act No. 11960, also known as the One Town, One Product (OTOP) program, on August 25, 2023, has ushered in a new era of possibilities for micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) nationwide.

The core objective of the OTOP program is to promote and support the unique products of each town by providing technical skills. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has been instrumental in capacitating MSMEs, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive as successful entrepreneurs.

Success Stories: The Art of Velasco and SJC Food Products

In Cotabato Province, the OTOP program has emerged as a catalyst for transformation, playing a pivotal role in uplifting small businesses and positively impacting the lives of their owners.

The Art of Velasco

Sherile Velasco, owner of "The Art of Velasco" in Kidapawan City, testifies to the life-changing impact of the OTOP program. Through DTI's Kapatid Mentor Me program, she gained valuable skills in costing, pricing, branding, labeling, and packaging. Velasco's determination combined with the program's support elevated her products and instilled a "think big" mindset.

SJC Food Products

For Shiela Livera, owner of SJC Food Products, the DTI deserves a "perfect score." Through various OTOP program trainings, she enhanced the packaging and labeling of her products, notably the best-selling "Kape Kidapawan." Livera credits DTI for the recognition her business received, emphasizing the crucial role the department played in their success.

Beyond Boundaries: Impact on Income and Profit

The positive ripple effect of the OTOP program is evident in the financial growth experienced by businesses in Cotabato Province. The Art of Velasco now boasts an annual income ranging from P300,000 to P400,000, while SJC Food Products' "Kape Kidapawan" sees a monthly profit of P23,000 to almost P30,000.

Advocating for SMEs Nationwide

Meanwhile, Senator Mark Villar, a vocal advocate for SMEs, stands firmly in support of the OTOP program. Highlighting the law's commitment to assisting SMEs and promoting Filipino products, Villar applauds the establishment of OTOP Philippines Trustmark and hubs. He emphasizes the strategic positioning of these hubs in high-traffic areas, ensuring maximum visibility and accessibility for Filipino entrepreneurs. Villar also urged local government units to establish their own LGU OTOP hubs in locations with substantial foot traffic, preferably within city or municipal halls.
