A Welcoming Destination for Global Cruisers
Surigao City's rise as a preferred destination for yacht cruisers began last year, when the local tourism office started offering free, direct assistance to visiting sailors. "We’ve been providing support through the City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office (CTCAO), offering help with immigration processing, supplies, and more," said Roselyn Merlin, Surigao's tourism officer. Unlike other regions where cruisers often rely on brokers, Surigao’s hands-on approach has made it a favorite stop for crews looking for a hassle-free experience.
Growing Global Interest
The city’s reputation as a cruiser-friendly destination has only grown. In 2023, 18 yachts from 12 countries, carrying 113 cruisers, docked in Surigao City to complete necessary immigration formalities. The majority of these cruisers were from Denmark, Switzerland, and France. Many stayed for several days to restock on essentials, such as fuel, food, and water. Surigao’s bustling local scene, from its restaurants to its vibrant community, has also drawn cruisers looking to explore the city beyond just resupplying.
“We consider them tourists,” Merlin explained, emphasizing the positive economic impact of these short visits on local businesses.

Surigao City is poised for even greater growth as a key stop for international cruisers. With more yachts expected throughout 2024, the city's tourism office is optimistic about the future.
