The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), in collaboration with Coca-Cola, has taken a significant step towards empowering small business owners in Mindanao by launching the Centers for Entrepreneurship (CFE) in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. This initiative aims to provide essential skills and resources to sari-sari store owners, ensuring their businesses not only survive but thrive.

A Vision for Sustainable Success

TESDA’s Partnerships and Linkages Office Executive Director, Floramel Joy Songsong, highlighted the transformative potential of the CFE. "Through the establishment of CFE, we aim to achieve sustainability of the STAR (Sari-Sari Store Training and Access Resources) program, which intends to equip sari-sari store owners and other micro-entrepreneurs with the skills needed for their businesses to succeed," she stated. The upgraded iSTAR program is designed to professionalize local entrepreneurs, turning 'sira-sira' or 'sara-sara' stores into flourishing sari-sari stores and carinderias.

Inclusive Growth for All Entrepreneurs

Coca-Cola has been a steadfast partner in the STAR and iSTAR programs. Initially focused on women sari-sari store owners, the iSTAR program has now expanded to include both men and women, welcoming anyone eager to start a business. These programs offer comprehensive training, peer mentoring, and access to resources, with the added convenience of digital accessibility for iSTAR participants. "Aside from Coca-Cola, we have also partnered with microfinancing institutions (MFIs) in the establishment of CFEs," explained Songsong, underscoring the inclusive nature of the initiative.

Collaborative Efforts for a Brighter Future

The collaboration between TESDA, Coca-Cola, and MFIs is instrumental in the success of CFEs. MFIs support the establishment and maintenance of these facilities and require their clients to undergo entrepreneurship training before applying for loans. Coca-Cola contributes counterpart funding for the development of training modules and program operations. The CFE in Tagum City is the latest addition, following successful launches in Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Nueva Ecija, Naga, and the National Capital Region. Songsong noted that the Tagum City launch marks the culmination of their soft launch series.
