Seventeen-year-old, self-taught app developer, Francisco Navalta has launched DavaoGo, a free web and mobile application designed to help Dabawenyos and visitors navigate Davao City’s public transportation system.
The idea came to Navalta during an ordinary school day as he thought of ways to make jeepney commutes easier. Development began in August, with the senior high school student working on the application during his free time.
From Gaming to Software Development
Navalta began his programming journey in 2022, when he was 13 years old. His interest started while playing Roblox at internet cafés, where he became curious about the systems behind the game.
He eventually developed his own programs and earned enough money to purchase a laptop to pursue software development. Navalta said he has since built 29 programs, including projects under FranCheese, a venture he founded.
FranCheese Asset Shop sells Roblox game systems, scripts, user interface assets, and other development resources. It also offers programming services for interactive karaoke and hangout game systems. The platform has served more than 600 customers and generated over P1 million in revenue.
DavaoGo Features Routes, Fares, and AI Assistance
Navalta said his motivation for developing DavaoGo was to help residents navigate the city’s transportation system.
The website officially launched on October 11, followed by its availability on the Google Play Store on October 13. The application is also available for iOS users.
DavaoGo features jeepney routes along major thoroughfares, as well as tricycle and pedicab routes serving areas beyond main highways. It also displays fares based on the latest tariff from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
Its “Local Community” feature allows users to suggest routes served by tricycles, electric tricycles, and pedicabs in smaller streets and alleys.
The app also includes “SANI,” an artificial intelligence assistant that suggests possible routes for more complex trips. It supports Bisaya, English, and Filipino.
Growing User Base and Partnerships
Navalta said DavaoGo has around 200 website users and approximately 1,000 mobile app users.
He is also open to partnerships with businesses interested in having their locations featured on the app’s map, as he continues to develop the platform to make commuting more convenient for Dabawenyos and visitors.
