Researchers from Mindanao State University–General Santos have developed an AI-powered device that helps persons with visual impairment cross streets safely. The device, called Safe Step, is designed to detect traffic light signals and translate them into audio cues, making road navigation safer and more inclusive.

Lead developer Jade Lienar Galaura explained that the system uses AI video analysis to monitor traffic lights. “We created a non-invasive device that can be installed on any traffic light or traffic light pedestrian,” Galaura said.

How Safe Step Works

Safe Step is composed of a webcam, speakers, and a processing unit. The webcam monitors the traffic light, and when it detects a green signal, the speakers notify pedestrians that it’s safe to cross.

“Magbibigay ng cue for the visually impaired. Mag-reach siya ng status ng traffic light tapos i-convert niya into audible sounds,” shared Cristina Dadula, mentor of the project. This feature allows pedestrians with visual impairment to confidently cross roads without relying solely on assistance from others.

Towards a Smarter and Safer Future

Although functional, the research team acknowledges that the device is still being refined. Dadula noted the importance of improving accuracy and reducing delay in its responses. “I-improve pa ang accuracy, ‘yung speed. Kasi ‘yung output niya is time to walk. As much as possible, zero delay,” she explained.

The researchers hope that with further development, Safe Step can be widely implemented across pedestrian crossings, creating safer and more accessible streets for persons with visual impairment.
